St George's School Sailing Club

Club Background and History

The Sailing Club was formed in 1981 when the yacht "Verulamia", a 31ft Golden Hind sloop, was donated to St George's School, Harpenden for the development and enjoyment of pupils. For many years, pupils, parents, staff and Old Georgians enjoyed the experience of "life aboard", learning basic navigation and the excitement and responsibility of going to sea as crew. Due to the change of staff, club members and changing interests of pupils, the yacht fell into disuse and was returned to the school's responsibility early in 2007.

Over the years the Club has developed a strong Dinghy section and we now have a number of RYA qualified Instructors and Assistant Instructors. The Club meets on Saturday afternoons and sails at Bury Lake in Rickmansworth for pupils to develop their skills. In addition to this there are opportunities to sail on larger lakes and tidal waters.

All pupils of St George's School are welcome to join. No sailing experience is needed, just an enthusiam to learn and particpate in the sport of sailing.

The Sailing Club is run by a committee, and would not be able to operate if it wasn't for an army of parents who serve on the committee, help with special events or drive the pupils to and from the sailing activities. Many parents have decided to join in the fun and learnt to sail alongside their children; no previous experience is necessary, so get in touch today - the more the merrier!
